The most common form of fraud that e-commerce sellers encounter is Card Not Present (CNP) fraud. This type of fraud happens when a bad actor uses stolen credit card information to make unauthorized purchases. When the real cardholder spots the unauthorized charge, they dispute the payment leaving the seller to cover the cost should the dispute be resolved in the cardholder’s favor.

To prevent being victimized by bad actors, look out for these red flags when reviewing orders made to your Cococart shop:

1. A new customer with a high order value. The customer may also place an order with a large quantity of the same product in different variations.

2. The customer's e-mail and cardholder name aren’t similar. Look out for bogus e-mail addresses (random combinations of alphanumeric characters).

3. The shipping address provided does not match the billing address.

It is also possible legitimate customers may also be purchasing for someone else from another country.

4. Failed CVC check.

5. A vague, unverified, or sketchy shipping address. Last minute change of address for courier pick-up is worth checking too.

Google Maps is your friend. Please use it to verify the shipping address.

6. The customer places a rush order.

7. The customer doesn't have a social footprint: unable to verify the customer on social media.

8. The customer's mobile number cannot be reached.

A responsible business owner always reviews orders before fulfilling them.

Spotting one red flag doesn’t necessarily indicate an order is fraudulent, but we encourage our merchants to carefully review all their customers’ information. The more red flags, the more caution is needed. 🚩🧐🛡️
